ABOUT YOUR SPINE

24 vertebra (7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar), the sacrum, and the coccyx make up your spinal column. Your spinal column protects the spinal cord which is part of the nervous system extending from the base of the skull.

31 pairs of spinal nerves stem from your spinal cord through openings between your vertebrae, relaying impulses to the muscles, blood vessels, and glands by means of outgoing nerves, either in response to incoming stimuli or to signals from the brain.

Misalignments of the spinal vertebrae and discs may cause irritation to the nervous system which may result in pain and a variety of health related conditions.

The vertebrae and discs in the lower back are the largest and carry the greatest amount of body weight. Strong back and abdominal muscles support the low back area. A healthy spine is one that is properly aligned with its three natural curves; cervical (neck), thoracic (middle where your ribs attach), and lumbar (low back).

It can be through injury, poor posture, or repetitive motion that bones become misaligned and musces become fibrotic and inflammed. The short term result is pain. The long term result of this condition is bone spurring, joint malfunction, and disc degeneration. (See section on Spinal Degeneration)

If you have a problem that repeats itself, you are probably at some stage of this degenerative process. When proper alignment is restored and restrictive soft tissue adhesions are released, painful pressure on the muscles and ligaments can be relieved and the healing process can be facilitated.
